UBC Teaching Business to 6 Professors

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported on Wednesday that six professors from Kim Il Sung University are taking MBA programs at a university in western Canada.

A Seoul-based journalist for the newspaper, citing a source within North Korea, originally reported that the six professors began the six months study abroad program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver in July, saying that they would focus on the study of capitalism and market economics.

However, more details have now emerged. In an interview released today with the UBC program head, Professor Park Kyung Ae, Yonhap revealed that the six would actually be first undertaking a two month English course before studying international business, international economics, finance and trade.

Only five of the professors are from Kim Il Sung University, Park further noted; one is from a university in Wonsan.

It is understood that the costs of the study program have been raised by a Canadian aid organization.

“The program is very unusual in that it allows North Korea’s college professors to conduct research (overseas) on a long-term basis,” Park commented. “Other universities in North America are paying close attention to the program, and through it, I plan to push for exchanges between university officials of the two countries.”
